Performance of disposable surgical kit
Regardless of whether the disposable surgical bag is sterilized or not, surgical instruments and linens (such as gauze, surgical gowns, and wound towels) must be cleaned. When possible, instruments and linens should be cleaned by hand or ultrasonic cleaner when possible. Articles sterilized by high-pressure steam or other methods (such as ethylene oxide) must be packaged by special methods. Packaging is to enhance the effectiveness of sterilization and storage of sterile items. Before the disposable surgical bag is packed, the instruments should be placed separately according to the order used by the surgeon. If steam or gas sterilization is used, a durable and soft package that can be penetrated by steam or gas, is impermeable to microorganisms, should be used.
When the package is sterilized with steam or gas, in order to ensure greater gas permeability, special guidelines should be followed. The package used for steam sterilization is wrapped by two layers of soft cotton cloth or non-knit (ie paper) material before sterilization. Packages (packages used immediately after sterilization need to be properly cooled) should be covered with waterproof and heat-insulating materials. This is not necessary if used within 24 hours after sterilization. Small items can be wrapped in sealable thermal paper or plastic bags. When using gas sterilization, it can be packed with sealable heat-insulating plastic bags, tubes or cotton cloth. When using plasma sterilization, it should be wrapped in a sealed, heat-insulated special strong I polyester bag or polypropylene bag. See steam, ethylene oxide, and dry heat sterilization for recommended times, temperatures, and humidity.
When disposable surgical kits are sterilized with steam and gas, the instruments should be placed on a lint-free (a linen) towel in a perforated metal instrument tray. If a boxed instrument with a lock is used, the box should be opened during autoclaving to facilitate the circulation of steam or gas. There should be a gap of 3 to 5 mm between the instruments. If possible, complex instruments should be disassembled before sterilization, and power equipment should be lubricated before high pressure. If the instrument has a cavity, it should be flushed with a small amount of water before steam sterilization.
Sterilizers reduce gas activity at the critical point of sterilization. The open end of a container (such as a saline bottle) should be upward or horizontal; a container with a lid should have the lid slightly open. Separate multiple containers with towels. There should be enough surgical gauze in each package. Before packaging, the sterilization indicator should be placed in the middle of each package. The solution should be separated from the instrument, slowly remove the air, and steam sterilize.
